Kolkata Alipore Zoo History
Around the 18th century, Governor General Richard Wellesley of Calcutta constructed the Alipore Zoo based on his personal ideas. Let us learn more about the history of the Kolkata Zoo.
Dr. John McClelland, then Curator of the Asiatic Society Museum, proposed the idea of creating the first zoo in Calcutta in 1842. But his attempts were futile. Dr. Joseph Burt Fire, then president of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, proposed building a zoo in Calcutta exactly 20 years later, in 1867.
When the plan to build the Kolkata Alipore Zoological Garden was presented, the people of the period considered it as a favorable omen. However, due to a lack of sufficient area, that proposal was abandoned. Carl Louis Schwendier, then Postmaster of the Government of India, proposed building the Calcutta Zoo again in 1873. Due to a shortage of sufficient space, that idea was put on hold for the time being.
The first superintendent of the zoo was Rai Bahadur Ram Brahma Sanyal. Who took very good care and improved of animals in zoos. He made significant contributions to the well-being of all the animals in Kolkata Zoo. He had good knowledge about every animal, bird, and reptile. The records were used to keep track of all the information about the animals. Later, based on these records, a book titled “Handbook of Management of Wild Animals in Captivity in Lower Bengal” was produced for the first time.
